1. Accountancy – stop yawning, accountants are losing their boring reputation. They now play a massive role in the success of companies, and can be handsomely rewarded as a result. You don’t need a maths degree as accountancy has its own qualifications and training path, but top firms who have their pick of the best talent will look favourably on strong mathematical ability, and it will make your training period easier if you have some skills in place. You do generally need good communication skills as well.
2. Statistical analysis/modelling – many companies need mathematicians to carry out statistical analysis or modelling. Market research companies use a large amount of stats, and need statisticians to help devise questionnaires and analyse results. Large industrial companies and finance companies also need these skills, and the Civil Service uses a large amount of statisticians.
3. Actuarial jobs– Like a niche type of statistician, actuaries work specifically in insurance, carrying out calculations to do with probability on issues such as risk and life expectancy to make sure policies are correct.
